British archbishop fondly remembers interaction with pope

The most senior Catholic in England and Wales was halfway up the M1, on his way to visit a friend in Birmingham, when a journalist called asking him about the death of the pope. “I couldn’t believe it,” Cardinal Vincent Nichols told Sky’s Rachel Venables. “It was a real shock – after seeing Francis on the TV only yesterday.” The archbishop fondly recalls how a conversation about a holy shrine in Argentina soon turned to a chat about the pope’s favourite football team.
