Pope Francis Remembered as ‘The People’s Pope’

From the beginning, Pope Francis was a man of the people, greeting the masses from an open-air Jeep, ditching his predecessor’s fully covered bulletproof vehicle. He was called “The People’s Pope” for his warmth and humility. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, he was ordained as a priest at age 32. As pope, he chose to name himself after Francis of Assisi, known for his simplicity and humanity.
