In a statement posted on social media platform X, European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen said that the pope “inspired millions” while Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin said that he “spoke out for the poor, the marginalised, and the oppressed”. U.S. Deputy President JD Vance, who had seen the pontiff on Easter Sunday (April 20) said he was “obviously very ill”.
