The shadow home secretary has told Sky News that he believes the police are “wasting colossal amounts of time” investigating non-crime hate incidents. Speaking to Sky’s Wilfred Frost on the Breakfast show, Chris Philp MP also claimed that recording such incidents “risks infringing free speech”, adding: “They should not be policing Twitter, they’re not the thought police.” Mr Philp confirmed that the Tories will be proposing an amendment to the government’s Crime and Policing Bill which would ban police from recording non-crime hate incidents, except in very limited circumstances.
